While looking up at the canopy of branches created by two trees in my neighborhood, I became struck by the idea that each opening in the canopy was like an apeture of light, and the amorphous form of thousands of apetures produced a dazzling optical effect. The only thing that interfered with this effect was the recognition that what you were looking at was a tree. My task was to remove the tree and cleave the light from the image heightening its presence. Cleave is a word that carries two seemingly contradictory definitions. First, it means to split apart or cut, usually along a natural line of division or grain. Second, it means to remain faithful to something, usually an idea or a principle. This project was all about those two ideas, splitting apart and fracturing an image, while at the same time remaining faithful to the project's origins. |
